Our Inclusive Climbing Workshops aim to support those with additional support needs access climbing activities by upskilling instructors, coaches, parents and carers with the knowledge, experience and skills to support and enable participation.
Who are Able 2 Adventure?
Able2Adventure delivers outdoors activities for all abilities and ages. Gemma is the Climbing For All provider at A2A. She set up a paraclimbing club at the Bendrigg Trust and recently established a paraclimbing camp with Glenmore Lodge for Young People.
What will the training cover?
The training day will cover:
- General disability awareness and approaches
- Venue assessment (understanding your site as well as what the participant may want to know)
- Choosing which routes to use and understanding why
- Equipment (what is already available to you and how you can use it)
- Side by side support
- Climbing movement techniques (common areas that people with both physical and learning impairments may need support with)
- Simple adaptations to the belay
- Accessible belaying (belaying from a wheelchair)
- Communication
- Planning a progressive session or programme
This course is part theory and part practical. You will be given the opportunity to experience some of the different methods for supportive climbing.
